Our Backpack Ingredients
Charles Eames once famously stated that “The details aren’t the details, they make the design.” It's a principle at the heart of all the ingredients used in our Roll Top Backpacks.
I set out to design a backpack for work and play: a hybrid backpack – for the everyday commute, travelling adventures and outdoor pursuits. Something designed to withstand the hardy British weather. I wanted to use sustainable natural ingredients that would vintage beautifully.
So, here’s the lowdown on all the details and features of our Winnats Roll Top backpacks…
Waxed organic cotton outer shell
The outer shell is made from a custom heavyweight Halley Stevenson’s waxed organic cotton, which is highly weather proof, for keeping your kit nice and dry on those rainy days. The Fluorocarbon-free dry impregnated waxed finish doesn’t crack or transfer onto other garments either – but it ages beautifully.
Custom stainless steel hardware
Our military grade custom stainless steel buckles are laser cut and polished in steel city Sheffield.

Vegetable tanned leather details
Hand cut and embossed in Derbyshire, our durable vegetable tanned leather buckle loops, grab handle and logo patch age beautifully to a rich patina. We also offer a vegan alternative.
Stash pocket
Covert yet accessible stash pocket with waxed organic cotton internal sleeves, perfect for keeping your valuables close. Finished with storm flap and hardy Japanese-made YKK zip.
Laptop sleeve
The internal cotton laptop sleeve fits most 15″ laptops (up to 235mm x 390mm).
Wool-rich recycled padding
Most backpacks use foam padding made from petrochemicals, yet our padding is made from recycled wool-rich carpet fibres from a premium carpet manufacturer in Yorkshire. Comfy, natural, sustainable.
Profile side-pockets
Perfect for water bottles and other non-valuables. The profiled design means they sit flush with the side of the bag when empty.
Proudly handmade in the UK
Manufacturing in the UK is expensive, but we believe in supporting local makers and craftspersons, which is why each of our packs are cut and sewn from start to finish in the UK. Each bag is then hand signed by its maker.

More adventures
Making a wooden surfboard
A little while ago, I headed to the rugged north coast of Cornwall to spend a week making my own wooden surfboard...like you do. It'd been on my bucket list to do an Otter Surfboards workshop for...well, since I found out that it existed! I met the wonderful human that is founder James Otter at the Do Lectures back in 2015. We became good pals and all the more so since we upped sticks from Sheffield and moved down to Cornwall in early 2019. There's a few more waves rolling in down here than in the Peak District you see....
Forest living
Ahead of moving house and becoming parents, we were well ready for some downtime. So we escaped to Campwell Woods for a few nights...
Our Time to Mull
It was a spur of the moment thing. We were staying in the van, just making it up as we went along. So, with no expectations, we booked ferry tickets across to the Isle of Mull.Kudhva: 'Hideout'
Kudhva means 'Hideout' in Cornish. Tucked away on the north coast of Cornwall, we couldn't wait to get a taste of the hidden treasure for ourselves.
